Our schedule follows the seasons. Most practices are held on our home trails at Hale Reservation in Westwood. Although always subject to change, we aim to hold practices from 5:30-7:30 pm on Tuesday and Thursday for the full team (5:30-7:30 once sunset gets later). On Monday’s, some high school riders conduct a group ride to increase their stamina from 3:30-5:30. We help riders decide which practice group they want to join based on their fitness, technical skills, and individual goals. We manage the details of our schedule through Wild Ones MTB TeamSnap, which is available to club members.
March-April is when we blow off the cobwebs and tune up for the spring season. Activities include bike maintenance, gravel rides, trail maintenance, and eventually getting out on the trails once mud season is over.
This is our primary season when most riders are active with the club. From April-June we pick up the pace with three rides a week until the racing starts towards the end of April. We also throw in a couple of road trips to the local mountain bike parks to do some gravity rides (Highland, Killington).
This is when the gravity team kick it up a gear racing as Eastern States Cup racing fom May to October. This is a less structured season for cross-country so we can hit the beach and enjoy the sun. We do keep our eye on local MTB events. These include the Maine NEHSCA race series and the Boston Barn Burner at Adams Farm. There are also many cool MTB camps to ride through the long summer days including Hale and Highland Park. Club members receive a discount at the Hale Mountain Bike Camp.
Fall Season
The fall is the best season to be out on the trails. As of now, we continue in a less structured fashion encouraging group rides when possible. For those interested in racing, NEHSCA heads up to Vermont for some of the best cross-country trails and fall colors. The VT NEHSCA races are located next to some great MTB destinations like Kingdom Trails and Killington. If we have riders interested in competing in these races we will create a practice schedule if appropriate. We also watch out for some fun local enduro and cyclocross events.
Winter Season
Cold, short days, and wide open, peaceful trails. A good pair of gloves, toe warmers, and the right attitude, and you can keep riding through the winter months. Got lights? The short days become exhilarating evening rides. Throw on some studded tires and the trails are all yours whatever the weather. No organized rides but lots of reasons to get outside.
